Battle of Understanding

I’ve realized that understanding is an award

It’s not something that comes naturally or willingly

It’s something I have to fight for

All I have to my defense on the battlefield

Are the words I try to express

The words I launch in your direction

Ricochet off your body of armor

And pierce my already broken heart

Kneeling on the ground

I beg for you to see my vulnerability as a sign of trust

Instead of an opportunity for attack

Somehow I’m always cut by the words I’ve cried out to you

That you have turned tone deaf

I will surrender for being unapologetically myself

Like I have time and time again

While you watch me bleed out

And point out my faults and flaws

Without recognizing the damage you’ve made
